Session Intention
Children explore free play materials independently and start forming ideas about how to use them well.
Materials Needed
Free Play Kit
Classroom Arrangement
1. This session can happen in an open space like a hall or ground in the school
2. Place materials in loose clusters in any open space. Children can rearrange them.
3. No assigned stations. Groups of 4-6 form naturally around shared interests.
4. Keep an aisle patch clear for active materials.

Opening Procedure (5-7 minutes)
PEP-UP: Zip Zap Zop (3 min)
1. Children stand at their desks
2. Pick one child to point to someone and say ZIP.
3. That child points to someone else and says ZAP.
4. That child points to someone else and says ZOP.
5. Do this quickly. Anyone who hesitates or makes the wrong move sits for 1 round. Play 2-3 rounds.
FREE PLAY NORMS (1 min)
1. Share the games.
2. Wait for your turn.
3. Be kind to each other.
4. Do not break the materials.
5. Pack everything properly when done.
6. Add: These rules stay the same even when no teacher or facilitator is watching.

Play Time (~25-28 minutes)
START PLAY:
1. Release the class to play.
2. If someone asks - What should we do? answer with - What do YOU want to try?
DURING PLAY:
1. Observe: who leads? Who follows? Who plays alone?
2. Do not suggest activities or directions.
3. Notice which materials children combine in creative ways.
STEP IN WHEN NEEDED:
1. Only step in for safety or if somebody is constantly excluded.
2. For rule-breaking, refer to the rules.
3. If play stops for 3+ minutes, ask - What does everyone want to try, take suggestions and step back again.
What You May Notice
1. More complex play often emerges in this group - self-made games, multi-step builds, shared narratives.
2. Children may combine materials from different stations in unexpected ways.
3. Peer pressure about how to play may appear. Note it. Only intervene if it becomes harmful.

Closing (~3-5 minutes)
1. Give a two-minute warning. Gather and sit.
2. Ask - What was the most interesting thing you played with today?
3. Ask - Would you change any of the rules for next time?
4. Pack up together.
Try Next Time
1. Let one group lead the station setup before the session starts.
2. Ask children to sketch or describe what they made.
3. Reduce the number of materials to deepen engagement.
