Materials List
i. Blackboard/poster with adverbs written on it.
Instructions
1. An adverb is a describing word that describes a verb. Here is a list of examples: Quickly, Angrily, Happily, Nervously, Silently, Loudly, Warmly etc
2. Write a list of adverbs on the blackboard or a poster. Answer any questions the students have about what they mean.
3. Split the class into two or more teams, and have them sit on opposite sides of the classroom.
4. Each team will choose a volunteer. The volunteers will stand up and walk over to the teacher. You will whisper an adverb from the poster to each volunteer.
5. The volunteers will stand in front of their teams. The teams will each pick an action (for example, driving a car) for their volunteer to perform. The volunteers will act out the action, but with their adverb. For instance, if the action was driving a car and the adverb was nervously, the volunteer might pretend to drive the car very slowly and shakily. Volunteers are allowed to make sounds while performing their actions, but they are not allowed to speak aloud their adverbs.
6. The first team to guess the adverb that the volunteer is using wins the game.
7. Each round, a new volunteer will be selected to perform the Charades. The game continues until all of the adverbs have been acted out.
Variations & tips:
1. Provide simple props (e.g., hats, scarves, toys) to help participants embody the actions.
2. Suggest silly contexts, pretend that you are eating ice-cream on the moon, or you're a robot walking in the park.
3. For students who are shy or non-verbal, let them draw their adverb or use gestures instead of acting.
