Instructions:
Materials List:
i. 10+ paper fish with vocabulary words written on them
ii. 10+ paperclips
iii. 2+ meter-long sticks
iv. 2+ meter-long pieces of string
v. 2+ magnets
vi. 10+ pieces of tape
Instructions:
1. Attach a paperclip to each fish with a piece of tape. You can choose the number of paper fish based on how many vocabulary words you would like to teach, but make sure to have one paperclip taped to every fish.
2. Arrange the fish on the floor so that all of the words are visible to the players. This place on the ground will be the "sea."
3. Tie a piece of string around each of the sticks. The number of sticks decides the number of kids playing in one round.
4. Once the string is tied around the stick, tie the other end of string around a magnet. If the magnet is not secure, you can tape it to the string. This stick will be the "fishing rod."
5. The game leader will select two or more volunteers from the class to be "fishers." Each fisher will take a fishing rod and stand at an opposite end of the sea.
6. The game leader will choose a vocabulary word, and read it out to the fishers.
7. The fishers will compete to be the first to find the vocabulary word. All of the vocabulary words are written on the paper fish.
8. Once a fisher sees the vocabulary word, s/he will use the magnet on the fishing rod to pick up the correct fish. The fishers are not allowed to touch the magnets or fish. Instead, they must only use the rods.
9. The fisher who picks up the correct word with his/her rod first wins the round.
10. The correct fish will be put back into the sea after every round, and the game leader will select two other students from the class.
11. The game leader will choose a new vocabulary word for the fishers to look for, and the game will continue until all of the students have had a chance to play.
Variations & tips:
1. Before fishing, make students do a little movement (e.g., “swim to your fishing spot” or “jump like a fish”
2. Call out word categories instead of specific words e.g. "Find all the fruits" or "Find all the nouns"
