Instructions:
1. Assign a colour to each different type of word. For example, adjectives could be red, nouns could be blue, and verbs could be yellow. Depending on how many colours of paper cards you have, you can be even more specific than that. You could have orange be animal names, green be adverbs, pink be numbers, purple be places, and so on.
2. Write down sentences with some of the words left out on the sheets of blank paper (for example, "At in the morning, I go to see a") and
3. Write a colour in each blank space on the sheets of paper based upon word types (e.g., "At pink in the morning, I go to purple and see an orange").
4. Write vocabulary words on the small different-coloured cards based upon which word type the colours represented. If yellow represented verbs, then you could write "jump" "run" and "dance" on yellow cards.
5. Give each student or group of students one of the sheets of paper with the sentences on them.
6. The students can come up to the front of the room and find words written on cards of the same colours as described on their sentence papers.
7. The students can choose which words they think fit best into the assigned sentence, and place the word cards into the sentences on the white pages (e.g., "At 7:00 in the morning, I go to Toy Bank and see a book.")
8. After all the students or groups of students have filled out their sentences, they can take off the coloured cards and pass their sentence sheets to other students/groups of students.
Variations & tips:
1.Let students make funny or silly sentences to make the activity more fun and creative.
2. Have one student read the sentence with missing words, while teammates race to find the correct color cards.
3.Create a “wrong word” challenge where one card is purposely mismatched, and other students have to find it.
